A recent article published in JAMA (Journal of American Medical Association) reveals that 50 years ago the Sugar Association (a lobbying group) manipulated dietary research findings to point the finger at fat rather than sugar as the culprit in our diets. This information was so powerful that in 1986 it led the FDA to proclaim there’s “no conclusive evidence” that sugar causes chronic disease. As everyone knows, the consequences have been dire on U.S. obesity and type 2 diabetes rates, which have skyrocketed. The deceit is likened to the treacherous and shameful practices conducted by the tobacco industry.
